Saddle Fit Assessment
Correct saddle fit is something that is essential for a pain-free horse! My training in saddle fit assessment was by the late Dr. Ridgway, and it was something he placed huge emphasis on in the later part of his career. If the horse expresses signs of back and/or shoulder pain, looking at the fit of the current saddle can almost always point to the source of the pain. I do not do fitting yet myself but have certified saddle fitters and representatives that I will refer to. More and more I find that back, shoulder, or hind end pain - as well as negative attitudes and behaviors when ridden - can be directly related to saddle fit. Since proper fit can make such a positive difference in regards to the horse’s health and wellbeing, I am passionate about helping owners discuss fitting options and solutions that will keep their equine partner happy and pain free!
Core Exercises
I like to leave “homework” for my clients to do with their horse. At the end of every bodywork session I’m happy to include some core exercises and stretches that can be done at home, in between sessions. A lack of core strength can wreak havoc on the equine back, creating underdeveloped topline muscles, or even leading to pathologies such as kissing spine, etc. A strong core provides valuable support to the precious vertebrae that we sit on top of! It is also beneficial to develop a quick, 5-10 minute stretching routine after each ride to relieve any tension or stiffness from your horse.
*I am very careful and cautious with horses entrusted to my care and place great importance on their correct development. Therefore, it is essential to work closely with the horse’s veterinarian and all other professionals involved during this process.
